I am Dr Hema Kalan, an Integrative Medical Doctor (GP). My aim is to help a person restore, regenerate and rebalance their health so that they can live a fulfilling life with ease, energy and joy.
Decisions regarding a person’s treatment is based on knowledge that is deeply anchored in science, is patient specific and combines the wisdom of both ancient traditional medicine together with modern medicine.

She runs her medical practice in Centurion, Pretoria where she brings the art and science of medicine together by treating a person holistically.
My Philosophy
My philosophy is that the body has a far superior intelligence than we think it has and is always sending us messages.
In a world where being healthy has become so complicated, we have to consciously start off with the basics, a person’s lifestyle, which is the very foundation of their health.
Life is not static and has an ebb and flow to it which can result in some health issues. If we have optimal health we can strive to maintain balance during our challenging times.
What is Integrative Medicine?
“Every disease is preceded by a dysfunction. Integrative doctors focus on the dysfunction rather than the disease. “
Integrative or functional medicine focuses on identifying, preventing and treating the root cause of illness, rather than merely managing the symptoms with chronic medication.
A good analogy is a tree, with the branches being your symptoms and the roots being the real cause of disease. We may use pharmaceutical or natural medicine to bandage the broken branch, but we’re essentially doing the same thing, treating the symptom.
The goal of integrative medicine is to nurture and nourish the roots (the underlying causes), to allow the whole tree to flourish.
Integrative medicine is the bridge between the alternative and conventional medical model using both modalities together in a safe and effective manner.

Why I practice this way?
I love optimising the wellbeing of a person. Increasing a person’s health and energy opens them up to a whole new range of possibilities in their lives, rather than just existing.
There is also a shift within the person, from helplessness to feeling empowered.
It is very satisfying to see a person reverse their symptoms.
Once a person starts investing in their health, they start investing in their family and even the community at large. We know that being connected to your community has a strong impact on wellbeing.
The tools I use is evidence-based, safe and effective with the least amount of toxic side effects.
